There is no place better for political buffs to visit than the District of Columbia. The federal government of the United States has three branches – Congress, Supreme Court, and President – and all are located here. In addition, there are 176 foreign embassies, as well as the main headquarters of many organizations, lobbying groups, and trade unions. Washington, DC is a fully planned city, based on the original design of architect Pierre Charles L’Enfant, who was commissioned by President Washington in 1791. The low skyline is due to the Heights of Buildings Act of 1910, which stipulates that the height of buildings cannot exceed the width of the adjacent street, plus 20 more feet.
Our vision care center is proud to be situated in the core White House area, practically next door to the most prominent residence in the country. Walk out the doors of Washington Eye Doctors and head south along Connecticut Ave and then down Pennsylvania Ave, and within six minutes you’ll tread directly into the landscaped grounds of the White House. On either side of the White House are the Treasury Building, fashioned grandly in the Greek Revival style of architecture, and the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which now houses the offices for the vice president and other members of the executive branch.
Also around the corner from our eye doctors in the White House area is the Blair House, which functions as the guest house for visiting heads of state, and the Decatur House, the first private residence on Lafayette Square. On days when you’d prefer to be indoors, stroll down Seventeenth Street to enter the Corcoran Contemporary, National Gallery of Art, and view a fabulous collection of present-day artwork. Another option is the Octagon Museum, where there is an engaging exhibition of life in the city at the birth of the nation’s new capital.
If you’re seeking monumental green spaces that promote contemplation and relaxation, Washington, DC, will fulfill all your wishes! Our eye care team often spends downtime next door in Farragut Square, a cute park with lush lawns and benches. If you’re looking for a larger park, head to Lafayette Square, set to the north of the White House. Some of the most inspirational monuments in the world, including the Washington Monument obelisk and the colossal Lincoln Memorial are only a few blocks away.
